PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Curriculum Intent

At St Alban’s Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our curriculum which aims to engage and motivate all pupils, in a supportive and challenging way. We aspire to provide every child with access to a wide variety of sports, with further opportunity to participate in competitive and non-competitive sporting experiences. PE at our school aims to support children’s health and fitness, while enabling them to develop their own physical confidence. We recognise the positive impact of physical activity on mental health, productivity and motivation which is why we prioritise high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in PE.

Our curriculum intention is to enable all children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of physical education; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to always give their best efforts to achieve their potential. Each lesson aims to give children to opportunity to develop their skills in a safe and positive environment. With this mind, we hope to develop a culture at St Alban’s where children value and appreciate the importance of physical education.

Implementation

Each child receives two lessons of PE each week, which are carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities are covered. These sessions are either run by our specialised sports coach, or class teachers.

Children in key stage 2 are provided with swimming lessons taught at St Charles Parson swimming pool, where they are taught by a qualified swimming instructor to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over 25m using a range of strokes. Children will also be taught the Water Smart schools programme with support from the Royal Life Saving Society [RLSS UK]

We use and adapt a Scheme of Learning from Get Set 4 PE to ensure planning, content and delivery is age appropriate. Lessons are carefully sequenced, with clear opportunities for extra challenge so that learning is differentiated for all abilities. Our PE Progression Map ensures that the PE requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met from EYFS to Year 6 and that there is clear progression across knowledge and skills. We assess all children against every unit of learning at the end of each half term.

We emphasise the importance of inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. Therefore, we aim to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities outside of competitive sports including:  fun sporting events; residential OAA experience for Year 6 pupils; Olympic athlete visits; extra-curricular clubs; lunchtime team games coordinated by a dedicated sports coach; and following key national/international sporting events as a whole school.

Impact

All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child will access all the key areas of the subject on offer at our school. PE planning has clear progression of skills and knowledge that make up part of our curriculum offer so that all children access it at an age-appropriate level.

As well as our regular PE lessons, our sports teams regularly participate in City and County competitions throughout the school year.

EYFS

In EYFS, children begin to improve their fundamental movement skills and teachers begin to consider the development of agility, balance, and coordination for each child.

Key Stage One

Pupils in KS1 are given many opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance, and coordination. They engage in competitive and co-operate physical activities through games, dance, and gymnastics.

Key Stage Two

Pupils in KS2 continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities. There are many opportunities across the year for children to take part in inter school competitions where their successes in sports are celebrated.

EYFS, KS1 and KS2

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply, and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in our programme of study. At, St Alban’s we use formative assessments to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers’ planning. Each part of the PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leaders.
